Bartlesville 6th Grade Band Guidelines

Welcome to the Bartlesville 6th Grade Band Program! This handbook is designed to alleviate any confusion that might occur during this transition period as well as to help keep the students and parents informed on our band program.

I. Attendance

We will have two concerts during the school year, our demonstration concert and our spring concert. Our administration is very supportive and allows us to use regular classroom time to rehearse the entire 6th grade as a group at the high school prior to each concert. Attendance is required for these rehearsals and concerts. Absences at any rehearsal or concert may be reflected in their semester grade. Please talk to the directors if a problem arises.

II. Grading

Grading will be based on playing requirements, preparedness, conduct, instrument being taken home, and some written work. We will be requiring practice cards this year; and we ask that your child practice at least 20 – 30 minutes per day. Generally, we have one playing grade and one written grade per week. There will be a place on the worksheets for a parent signature. The reason for this is two-fold: (1) we would like the parents to still have knowledge of what their student is expected to do in our band class, and (2) a required signature will help get the homework finished and back to school for a grade.

III. Supplies

All students will be required to bring their instrument, folder, book and pencil every day. We will be using the Band Expressions Book One this year, which can be purchased at Saied Music Company in Tulsa or at Smitty’s Music here in Bartlesville. Periodic folder checks may occur. Each student will also be required to have the following as pertains to their instrument:

Woodwinds (excluding flutes): At least 3 working reeds at all times. Clarinets should purchase only Vandoren reeds. The reason for this is because these reeds are made from well seasoned cane, last longer and produce better tone quality. Each student should also have his or her own tube of cork grease and a silk swab. Note: Clarinets should be using a Vandoren B45 or 5RV mouthpiece.

Brass: Piston and rotor valves need to be oiled on a regular basis. Trumpet/cornet players need to purchase valve oil, which should be carried in the case at all times. The trombone requires slide oil. The trombone slide should always move freely. All trombone players should have a bottle of slide oil in their case. It is also a good idea for trombone players to have a small spray bottle of water. A lot of times, the trombone slide does not necessarily need more oil, just some moisture.

All brass instruments have tuning slides that should move freely. As you may have guessed, there is a specific kind of grease that is made for tuning slides. From time to time, students need to check their slides and if they do not move freely, they need to pull them out, wipe them down with a clean cloth or paper towel, and apply a little bit of slide grease. It is best to only pull one slide at a time as to not mix them up. If your child’s instrument has a frozen slide, have the director take a look at it and if they cannot fix it, take it to a qualified technician. This could save you a lot of unnecessary frustration and expense. Brass students need to have a tube of slide grease in their case at all times. Note: Trumpets should use a Bach 5C mouthpiece and Trombone players should use a Bach 6 ½ AL (either small shank or regular).

Percussion: You will need a kit consisting of a snare drum, practice pad, bell kit & mallets plus stands for each. These items are sold as a set or separately. In addition to these items you will need the following books: "A Fresh Approach to Mallet Percussion" & "A Fresh Approach to Snare Drum" both by Mark Wessels.
