Dear 6th Grade Parents,

It’s hard to believe that we are already halfway through the fall semester!  We are thoroughly enjoying this year’s 6th grade class.  They work hard and show signs of improvement every day.

The success of our students is dependent on what happens both in and out of the classroom.  It is imperative that instrumental music students spend time outside of class each day practicing and reinforcing those concepts and techniques that are introduced in class.  In an effort to better track the practice habits of our students, all 6th grade band students will be required to keep a weekly practice log beginning next Monday, October 19th.  Students will be expected to list the exercises that they practice, the metronome marking at which they practice them, the time spent on each exercise and their total practice time for each day (a minimum of 30 minutes a day is expected of all students).  We also ask that parents please initial their child’s total practice time to verify that students are accurately recording the amount of time they spend on their instrument at home.  These practice logs will be turned in each Friday for a grade.  Practice logs without parental verification will not be accepted.

Another event that we would like to mention at this time is the 6th Grade Demonstration Concert which is scheduled for Thursday, November 19th at the High School Fine Arts Center beginning at 7:00 p.m.  This concert will illustrate what we do with your students on a daily basis and give them an opportunity to perform with the other sections of the band.  All 6th grade band students from both Central and Madison Middle Schools will be featured on this concert. Students should be at the High School at 6:15, and they should wear Slacks, a nice shirt, and dress shoes.  Ladies can wear a dress if they want to, but a nice pants outfit would be fine. The only thing we ask is to not wear jeans and a T-shirt.

If you should have any questions about how your child is doing in band, please feel free to contact us.  Have a safe and restful break!

Sincerely,

Mike Dodson (dodsonme@bps-ok.org)
